Ask Nate: If laminate is waterproof, why wipe up spills right away?

Waterproof performance gives you time to handle an everyday spill. It does not turn standing water, a plumbing leak or repeated moisture into a no-maintenance condition.

Start with the exact product documents

AFD's current Oak Collection sheet identifies T352 English Oak as a 12-millimeter, floating laminate plank with a listed 72-hour waterproof rate. The collection page also links separate installation, warranty and care documents. Read those documents together rather than treating one word on a specification sheet as the complete use and care plan.

Waterproof still has boundaries

AFD's warranty describes protection from normal everyday household spills when the liquid is wiped up and the floor is allowed to dry completely. The same document excludes standing water, appliance or plumbing leaks, flooding, and continuous, repetitive or long-term water exposure.

That distinction answers the question: waterproof performance is useful for an ordinary spill, but it is not permission to leave water sitting or to ignore the source of recurring moisture.

Use a simple cleanup routine

AFD's care guide says to wipe spills immediately and dry wet areas promptly so moisture does not remain at the seams. For routine cleaning, it calls for a damp—not soaking wet—microfiber mop, and it says to avoid steam mops because excessive heat may cause warping.

If water keeps returning, stop treating it as a cleanup issue. Identify the leak or moisture source and have the affected floor evaluated before more material is ordered.

Ask about the room before choosing the floor

AFD's installation guide calls for a dry, climate-controlled indoor environment and says laminate is not recommended in areas with extreme temperature and moisture fluctuations, including pool or hot-tub rooms, exterior porches and garages. Your independent installer should confirm that the intended room, subfloor and installation plan meet the current product instructions.

Send Nate the exact product code, room type, approximate area, project ZIP code and any known moisture conditions. Vegas Home Supply supplies materials and does not perform installations.
