Ask Nate: If SPC is waterproof, why does the concrete slab still matter?

Waterproof describes the flooring product. It does not make an uneven or moisture-affected concrete slab disappear. The product documents still put jobsite preparation at the center of the plan.

Waterproof flooring and a prepared slab answer different questions

AFD's current SPC specification sheet identifies the Builders Choice BC001–BC006 products as waterproof rigid-core vinyl with a floating installation method. That describes the material and how the floor system is assembled; it is not a statement that every concrete surface is ready to receive it.

AFD's separate installation guide says the owner or installer must confirm that the jobsite and sub-surfaces meet the guide before a board is installed. It calls for the installation area and subfloor to be clean, dry, stiff and flat.

The concrete checklist is specific

For an existing concrete foundation, the AFD guide calls for flatness within 3/16 inch over 10 feet, a 6-mil clear virgin moisture barrier, and retained documentation of moisture-test results. These are product-specific instructions worth putting in front of your independent installer before quantities and timing are finalized.

A waterproof surface does not correct high spots, low spots or movement below the floor. It also does not replace the moisture-control steps named in the installation guide. Ask how the slab will be checked, what preparation may be required, and who will document the conditions.

Plan the room edges and long runs too

The same guide calls for an expansion space around the room perimeter and a T-molding when a run is greater than 40 feet in length or width. Doorways, adjoining floors, fixed objects and large open areas therefore belong in the material conversation—not just the room's square footage.

Share a simple plan or photos that show those conditions. Your installer should determine the layout, preparation, transitions and installation method. Vegas Home Supply supplies materials and does not perform installations.

What should you send Nate?

A few details help separate the product selection from the questions that still belong with the installer.

  • The exact collection, color and product code you are considering.
  • Whether the foundation is concrete and whether existing flooring is being removed.
  • Room dimensions, long uninterrupted runs, doorways and adjoining surfaces.
  • Any slab or moisture information already provided by your installer.
  • Your project ZIP code and desired material timing.
