SPC vs. laminate: what should you compare before ordering?

Start with the room, then the material

Tell your supplier and installer where the floor will go, how the space is used, and whether it is a remodel or new construction. Include the existing surface, approximate area, and desired timing. Those details are more useful than choosing a floor from a photo alone.

SPC is a rigid-core vinyl construction. Laminate is a different layered flooring category. AFD lists its SPC and water-resistant laminate in separate collections, so compare the actual documents for the products on your shortlist.

Compare the information that changes the decision

Keep the product name, color, and SKU together. Then ask for a like-for-like comparison of the specifications below.

• Approved room types and residential or commercial use
• Plank dimensions, total thickness, and carton coverage
• Installation method and subfloor requirements
• Attached underlayment and compatible accessories
• Water-performance wording, limitations, and care instructions
• Matching transitions, trim, and current availability

Read the water-performance language carefully

Use the manufacturer’s wording for the particular product. A waterproof or water-resistant label does not answer every question about subfloor moisture, room suitability, installation, or warranty coverage. Ask your installer to review the current instructions before committing to a product.

Avoid comparing a vinyl wear-layer number directly with a laminate surface rating. They describe different things. Ask what each specification means for the products you are actually considering.

Bring the shortlist into the real space

Ask our team about sample availability for two or three options. Look at samples beside the cabinetry, wall finish, and trim, in the room’s own lighting. A screen is useful for choosing a direction; a physical sample helps confirm color and texture.
